Your Appointments

Our artificial eyes are completely custom made from a medical grade acrylic called polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA). We use a modified impression technique which allows us to create a comfortable prosthesis designed to match your companion eye. We take great pride in our work and satisfaction is guaranteed.

During your FIRST appointment, we will take several simple measurements and colour matches of your remaining eye. We will also create the first painting of your iris. An impression of your socket will be taken using an ophthalmic alginate and a wax pattern will be fabricated to fit your socket and create symmetry with your companion eye.  You will be fascinated as you watch the beginning process of fabricating your ocular prosthesis.  This first appointment is generally one and a half hours long.

The SECOND appointment is primarily focused on painting. We have a specialized technique that allows us to try the partially completed prosthesis in your socket to evaluate the colour and veining. This method enables us to observe intricate details.  It will be your job to sit back, observe and enjoy this amazing process.  You can expect to be at this appointment for one and a half hours.

During the THIRD and usually last appointment, the prosthesis is fitted and final detailed adjustments are made for cosmetic and comfort.  You will be taught to remove, replace and care for your new prosthesis.  This appointment is approximately half an hour.

A follow-up appointment is given approximately one month after the fitting of the artificial eye to evaluate the appearance and fit after the socket has had time to adjust to the new prosthesis.

It is also necessary for you to return to see your ocularist on an annual basis to have the artificial eye repolished. This enables the protein deposit to be removed and to restore its lustre/shine. This appointment also provides an opportunity to make any adjustments and to provide you with the best possible appearance and comfort.

Your artificial eye will need to be replaced approximately every five years. It is very common for your initial prosthesis to be replaced after only two or three years due to socket changes which are dependent on the severity of your injury and any surgical procedures.
